It’s almost summer, and that means a lot of good things are happening on Lookout Mountain. Of course Camp is about to start (only 15 days until first term Opening Day!) and we can’t wait. And on top of that the Farm at Windy Hill is in high gear growing food for the Camp DeSoto Dining Hall as well as our local community. The seasonal farmers have joined the team and there is always lots of activity in the gardens - planting, transplanting from the greenhouse, watering, harvesting, preparing harvested vegetables for market, and caring for the animals. It’s a flurry of activity and growth and such thoughtful care.
And pretty soon, we want to invite you to come see all that the farm team is working on! The Farm at Windy Hill hosts two Barbecue Pincics each summer, and we would love for you to come! (The Summer Barbecues are conveniently scheduled to coincide with Camp drop-off, so if you’ll be in Mentone the night before Opening Day in June or July, we hope you’ll stop by.)
The barbecues are a time to celebrate the hard work and care that goes into our food by joining the farmers for a summer feast! There is a delicious picnic of farm-grown vegetables and pork along with lawn games, live music, and a chance to shop at the farm market. Kids have plenty of space to run around while the adults visit, and it is a great time to enjoy family and friends, surrounded by the beauty of the farm in summertime.
The farm’s kickoff barbecue will be Thursday, June 6th, the night before First Term Opening Day. If you and your family are in town for Camp drop-off, bring your crew to Windy Hill for supper and a fun place for the kids to run around!
Count us in!The night before Second Term drop-off is the 4th of July - what better way to celebrate than a barbecue picnic in Mentone? Join us at the Farm to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy and all that we have to be grateful for!
Count us in!We hope you’ll be able to come! Whether you’re dropping off a camper or not, anyone is welcome.
The Farm has so much to teach us. The summer season is one in which we get to see (and taste!) God’s goodness.
Isn’t your mouth watering? The farm produce does more than just nourish bodies - it brings delight!
The abundance at The Farm at Windy Hill is the result of steady, thoughtful work over the course of months. The farmers care for the land and the animals throughout the year so that campers and our local community can be well-fed, in more than one sense of that term. It truly is a labor of love and service.
So join us for a summer picnic to celebrate their work and enjoy the fruits of their labors!
The farm market will be open during both events. Come prepared to take home some fresh-from-the-garden goodness!
If you are planning to come to one of the summer barbecues, let us know! (It helps us know how much food to prepare.)
Want to enjoy a farm meal at home? Family packs will be available for pick up the day of the barbecue (1lb. of pulled pork, homemade sauce, your choice of 2 or 3 sides, and buns and rolls for four.)
